On the fourth lap of the first heat race Ryan's Lotus 22 collided with another driver at the Courbe Gueux - also known as Courbe Luigi Musso after the Italian Formula 1 driver who lost its life there in the 1958 French Grand Prix. It was a flowing fast right-hander, taken at very high speed, and Ryan's car rolled violently in the accident. He suffered a broken leg, crushed hip and severe internal injuries. Peter Ryan died of his wounds in a hospital in Paris one day later.
