On Lap 4, race leader Buddy Baker (#28) blew a left rear tire just past the start/finish line. Cars were scattered all over Turn 1 after blindly piling into the smokescreen. A total of 18 cars were involved in the massive melee. With the worst of the wreck seemingly over, Cale Yarborough (#11) had just got out of his Oldsmobile to inspect the damage. D.K Ulrich, who had lost his steering and brakes in the wreck and was attempting to make it back to pit road, slammed into the stationary Dave Marcis (#71), who rolled into Yarborough, pinning him between his car and Marcis'.
Cale was quoted after the wreck that his legs went momentarily numb, and feared that they'd been sheared off by the impact. Miraculously, his only injury came from a bruised left foot.
