As Phil Parsons (#66) was giving a push to Darrell Waltrip going into Turn 1, Cale Yarborough gave a hard shove to Parsons ahead of him. Waltrip and Parsons, still locked together, hooked into the outside wall. The #66 Pontiac Le Mans of Parsons barrel-rolled multiple times down the 33-degree banked turn, landing on top of a spinning Ricky Rudd, who finished the race in 8th despite significant roof damage. Parsons suffered a broken shoulder and was sidelined from racing for nearly two months.
