The accident happened on Lap 362 immediately following a restart. Bobby Allison (#2) hit fenders with Cale Yarborough on the backstretch. Allison's Mercury hit the outside wall and went about 20 feet into the air. Allison's car tumbled nearly the entire backstretch. "The car wasn't handling worth a darn - while it was upside down," Allison later said. Allison spent three days in the hospital but suffered no serious injuries. He did suffer discomfort when his eye popped out of its socket.
