The wreck began on Lap 19 in the first qualifying race, when David Ray Boggs (#57) blew a tire in the backstretch. The wreck scattered the field into a chain-reaction pileup involving 13 cars. Raymond "Friday" Hassler (#39) spun head on into the outside retaining wall. As his Chevy came to rest on the racing line, and with drivers still piling into the crash scene, Jimmy Crawford (#54) slammed broadside into Hassler at over 170mph. Hassler died instantly from the impact, suffering massive skull and neck injuries. Crawford survived with a fractured jaw and a lacerated chin.
