On Lap 32, Steve Grissom was slowed up by the lapped truck of Rick Ware coming out of Turn 4. Seizing a passing opportunity, Tony Roper (#26) attempted to drive between both trucks in the tri-oval. Grissom, not expecting the rapidly approaching truck on his inside, clipped Roper, hooking him dead-on into the outside wall at a high rate of speed.
Roper was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where he passed away the following day at age 35. Cause of death was a massive neck injury.
