The wreck began as the lead pack rushed down the backstretch on Lap 120. Leader Alan Kulwicki was given a shove from behind by Sterling Marlin. Kulwicki got loose momentarily, clipping the #17 of Darrell Waltrip alongside him. Waltrip was then pushed into the path of Joe Ruttman's Oldsmobile, and both drivers spun towards the infield.
Things took a turn for the worse when the two cars drove across the paved chicane used for road course events. Waltrip's car jumped into the air, digging into the grass as it landed, which sent his Chevrolet into a series of violent rolls. Waltrip survived the incident without serious injury.
