NASCAR Modified veteran "Chargin'" Charlie Jarzombek of Baiting Hollow, NY was killed on lap 6 when the throttle on his car #5 hung coming down the front stretch, In an attempt to avoid other cars, Jarzombek steered to the inside of the track, however was just clipped by Kerry Malone (#97), sending Jarzombek's car into the outside wall drivers side first at roughly 80mph. while Malone's car backed into the wall and caught fire as 3 other cars became involved.
Jarzombek, 44, was killed instantly due to massive head and neck injuries, Officials were later widely criticized for their handling of Jarzombek's body, lifting him up and out of the car in full view of shocked spectators. All other drivers were unharmed.
