On Lap 176, Richard Petty lost control of his car coming out of Turn 4, colliding into the pit wall and flipping over. Petty's arms dangled outside the window as the car tumbled, causing Petty to suffer a dislocated shoulder. As a result of this crash, driver-side safety nets would become mandatory the following season.
