"The King" would fall victim to one of the worst wrecks in his distinguished career during the 1988 Daytona 500. Exiting the fourth turn, Richard Petty (#43) was clipped from behind by Phil Barkdoll (#73). The car took off, barrel-rolling wildly along the catchfence before spinning across the track. Brett Bodine (#15) blew a tire and lost control of his vehicle while attempting to slow down and slammed into the front of the stationary Petty car.
Petty was taken to the hospital, and later released with only minor scrapes and bruises.
