Austin Wayne Self (#98) got loose and spun through the tri-oval, all cars were able to avoid Wayne Self until Brad Smith (#48) was left with nowhere to go, slamming into Wayne Self.
With the steering broken and throttle hung on Smith's car, he sped at full speed towards the inside wall, slamming into it violently drivers side, before careening up the banking on fire and winding up in the turn one grass.
Smith was able to climb from the car before being loaded onto a stretcher, suffering two fractured ankles that sidelined him for the rest of the season. Wayne Self was unharmed.
