On lap five, a multi car accident occurred in the tri-oval when Elliott Sadler (#66) and Stanton Barrett (#89) tangled, Sadler spun up into traffic wiping out several cars, including David Green (#92) and Kevin Schwantz (#88).

Both the hood and windshield came off Barrett's car, with the windshield landing in the grandstands and hood landing on pit road. Four spectators were injured by the flying windshield, with one requiring surgery for a deep cut to the hand. All drivers were uninjured.
