Coming through the tri-oval, Ward Burton (#95) was spun, sending his car airborne and slamming down onto its roof, Burton's car slid for over 500 feet upside down before coming to a stop, Multiple drivers also crashed while trying to avoid Burton's sliding car. The only injury was Burton who suffered a cut lip.
After crashing out in this accident, Randy Lajoie later relieved for Tommy Houston, however Lajoie would also go upside down in a crash later in the race.
