With 12 to go in the 1992 Sportsman finale, hard racing between Tim Bender (#36) and Ronnie Sewell caused Bender to spin in front of the entire field. He first was struck by Peter Gibbons (#92), spun up the track, clipped Terry Brooks (#48), then collected Steve Knipe (#06), who went airborne briefly. As Bender's car spun back down, several drivers piled into one another, with Paul Shaver (#43) and Ron Barfield, Jr. (#78) hitting the water barrels, Shaver piling into an already spinning Jerry Rector (#81). 13 cars were involved in all, the aforementioned seven retiring from the race. Nobody was injured.
This pileup was the largest crash in the crash-prone NASCAR Sportsman Division by known cars involved.
