In response to Francois Cevert's fatal accident two years earlier, the 1975 USGP saw the addition of a chicane in the middle of the Esses. The unusually large beveled kerbs would cause more than a few hair-raising incidents during the weekend. Aside from the undersides of both Lotuses getting torn up in practice, Vittorio Brambilla would be the first true casualty of the new chicane. During qualifications, the March came in hot at approach, hitting the kerb and sending the back of the car airborne before plowing into the wire catchfencing. Brambilla was unhurt.
