On May 16, 1990, during practice for the May Sportsman festivities at Charlotte, Ted Comstock spun in turn 3, collecting Terri Sawyer. David Gaines and Peter Gibbons collided while attempting to avoid the pair, sending Gaines into the inside water barrels and Gibbons into the outside wall. Several seconds later, Steve McEachern rounded turn four and slammed into the back of Gaines' car, causing McEachern's car to flip.

Gaines, 27, of Goldston, North Carolina, was killed instantly in the crash, apparently struck by a piece of debris. McEachern was taken to the hospital with hand injuries. All other drivers were unharmed.
