Bobby Johns (#5) made contact with Roy Tyner (#9) and lost control on the backstretch, Johns' Pontiac flipped onto its roof before slamming into the pit wall, sending debris flying.

Debris of the wall struck pit crewman Paul McDuffie and Charles Sweatland, as well as NASCAR official Joe Taylor, killing them instantly. A further 4 pit crewmen were injured, 2 critically. Johns was unharmed.
