Only a mere two weeks after their nationally televised fisticuffs in the Daytona 500, Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison traded fenders once again in the Carolina 500 at Rockingham, this time taking a bevy of top contenders with them. Yarborough (#11) and D. Allison (#1) came together as the battled side-by-side for the lead coming into Turn 3. Both spun into the wall, collecting Darrell Waltrip (#88) and Buddy Baker (#28). Baker's wrecked vehicle slid down the banking, collecting even more drivers in the process. None of the drivers involved were injured. As a result of the incident, NASCAR's Director of Competition Bill Gazaway extended Cale and Donnie's 3-month probation from Daytona to the remainder of the 1979 season.
