During Thursday practice, Gerhard Berger had coast to a stop in the tunnel due to a dead battery. As the marshals pushed the stricken Ferrari out of the way, Andrea de Cesaris came through the tunnel at full-speed and lost control. The marshals were luckily able to leap to safety just before the Rial collided with the rear of the Ferrari. Though Andrea claimed no yellow flags had been put out at the time of the accident, video evidence proved otherwise, and he was fined $5000 for his troubles.
