With 2 laps remaining, one of the worst accidents in ARCA history unfolded on the backstretch. Joey Miller (#9) spun off turn 2, barely clipping Todd Kluever (#60) in the right rear, Kluever's car turned over onto it's roof, right into the path of Larry Foyt (#16) before doing numerous rolls. As smoke filled the backstretch, blinded drivers piled into the wreckage, including Kyle Krisiloff (#7) and Dan Shaver (#49) who was smashed in the rear, turning his car upside down.
Remarkably only Billy Venturini suffered serious injuries, breaking his neck and suffering severe ligament damage. Venturini spent a week in hospital and returned in the later part of the season. Various other drivers including Shaver and Kluever suffered minor injuries.
