Jack Brabham's engine broke a connecting rod on the first lap, which put a hole in the block. As he got down to Mirabeau, there was enough oil coming out of the hole to cause him to spin. He reversed all the way down the hill, turned around and continued to the pits, dropping oil all the way. This caught out Clark on the next lap who slipped on the oil and went down the escape road.
