On Lap 285, Jimmy Spencer lost control down the backstretch; spinning down in front of a pack of cars, where he was hit hard by Mike Skinner. Steve Grissom (#41) managed to avoid Spencer, but was knocked into a spin by Skinner. Grissom impacted the angled inside wall rear-first with such force that it shattered the concrete barrier, sending his Chevy onto its roof, and knocking the fuel cell clear of the car, bursting into flames alongside the outside wall. Miraculously, Grissom was treated and released from the infield care centers with minor cuts and bruises.
