Michael Waltrip (#21) spun off of Turn 2, catching a bit of air before coming to a stop in the outside backstretch wall. Other drivers lost control while attempting to take evasive action in the smokescreen, including Andy Santerre (#47), who slid drivers-side first into the stationary Waltrip car. Santerre suffered a broken leg, sidelining him for half the season.
