The incident on Lap 158 occurred as Dale Earnhardt, Al Unser Jr. (#46), and Bobby Hillin Jr. (#90) went three-wide coming out of Turn 4. Unser cut in front of Earnhardt, sending Unser into the outside wall, ricocheting back to the inside and into the path of Hillin. Both cars spun through the tri-oval grass and back up towards the racing surface. Kyle Petty (#42) attempted to go up the outside line to avoid the incident, but was collected by the out-of control Hillin car instead. Both Petty and Hillin got into a heated exchange of words as they walked away from their wrecked cars.
