Co-driver Angelo Garzoglio died from severe burns after saving his driver Mauri Pregliasco from their burning car.
Their Lancia Stratos hit a curbstone shortly after the start of the first special stage of the 1976 Rally Valli Piacentine. The impact ripped out the fuel tank, the car subsequently went up in a fireball. Pregliasco fell unconscious while Garzoglio was ejected from the car. Garzoglio then returned to the wreckage to successfully pull out his driver but in the process suffered third-degree burns to which he succumbed almost one month later.
