During a practice session for the Pepsi 400, Terry Labonte (#1) spun backwards into the outside wall at the Turn 4 exit, setting off an eight-car pileup. Darrell Waltrip (#17), who's car had come to a stop on the racing line, received a vicious drivers-side impact from a spinning Dave Marcis (#71). Waltrip was knocked unconscious and rushed to intensive care at Halifax Hospital with two broken legs and a broken arm, which would sideline him for two months.
