The first of two Twin-125 qualifiers featured a massive pile-up in the tri-oval area that took out more than a dozen cars. The incident started when Lake Speed (#83) appeared to block Rick Wilson (#4) coming to the start/finish line. Instead of letting off, Wilson forced the issue and pushed Speed out of the way, sending him spinning down towards the apron, then back up again into traffic. The resulting smokescreen impaired the vision of the rest of the pack, causing the field to scatter and crash in all directions. One driver, Phillip Duffie (#32), drove on top of another car in the melee. Luckily, no one was injured.
