During a Friday practice session, Bill Elliott had a right-front tire go down on his Ford Thunderbird as he headed through Turn 3, sending him into the outside wall at full speed. Elliott suffered a broken left wrist in the incident, an injury that would plague him for the rest of Speedweeks, ultimately giving way for a relief driver to take his place in the Daytona 500 a week later.
