The 1975 Daytona 500 was only five laps old when a large pileup occurred, involving nearly a dozen cars. The incident began when Jim Vandiver (#99) lost control and drove up the track between Turns 3 and 4, directly into the path of Dick Trickle (#75). Vandiver was hit by Trickle, then hit again drivers side first by Joe Mihalic (#60). Most drivers escaped serious injury with the exception of J.D. McDuffie (#70), who suffered a fractured sternum.
