It only took one lap in the second Twin 100 qualifier for a major calamity to occur. It all started when Rod Eulenfeld (#71) lost an engine going through Turn 4. Eulenfeld's Ford spun to the apron as it slipped in its own oil, then doubled back sharply towards the racing line and into the path of Billy DeCoster (#63). Eulenfeld bounced over DeCoster, then slid upside-down towards the tri-oval before coming to a stop in flames. A multitude of drivers lost control as they approached the crash scene, quickly turning the area into a total junkyard.
Luckily, Eulenfeld's only "injuries" came from a pair of singed eyebrows; however, Buck Baker received a fractured rib and a left knee injury for his troubles.
