1939  ยป Indianapolis 500

During the 1939 Indianapolis 500, top racer Ralph Hepburn handed the wheel of the car to relief driver Bob Swanson after he had driven his Stevens - Offenhausen "Hamilton-Harris" for 104 laps. Two laps later, though, Swanson lost control of the car from unknown reasons and spun it off leaving Turn 2. Floyd Roberts, who was approaching the Stevens fast, could not avoid this car and t-boned it. Roberts' Wetteroth-Offenhauser rode over Swanson's vehicle, over the guardrail, and through a perimeter fence before coming to a stop. Swanson's car was overturned, throwing him from the vehicle. Chet Miller (#3) flipped his front-driven Summers-Miller attempting to avoid the original accident, plowing through the inside wooden guardrail and flipping wildly in the grass. Roberts suffered fatal injuries in the accident.
