Description On the eight lap of the Permatex 300, Don MacTavish (#5) drove through an oil slick heading towards the start/finish line. MacTavish spun towards the outside wall, slamming into the metal crossover gate at around 185mph. The impact sheared open the entire front end of the car, including the engine.

The lifeless body of MacTavish was still strapped into his seat, completely exposed to the elements, when Sam Sommers (#27), unable to see through the smokescreen, slammed into the front of MacTavish's car. The second impact severed MacTavish's legs completely off and killing him instantly.
