After setting an ARCA record setting 205.432mph lap during qualifying, Bill Venturini destroyed his car in final practice later that afternoon, after getting in oil, Venturini lost control, rolling seven times through the tri-oval.
Venturini, who didn't have a backup car, was going to withdraw from the race until Phil Barkdoll gave him a show car that Barkdoll's wife had on display in town. Venturini retained his pole position, however bowed out of the race with engine failure on lap 82, finishing 33rd.
