Description During the Friday practice for the British GP, Cecotto was to suffer a crash which would end his F1 career. On his 2nd flying lap, Cecotto went off at Dingle Dell and crashed head on into the barrier, destroying the front of the car. Red flags were shown and the practice session was stopped to extract Johnny from the wreck. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Sidcup by helicopter, where they performed surgery on his badly broken legs. Despite recovering, he never regained the strength in his feet to return to the cockpit of an F1 car and was resigned to racing touring cars instead, where he competed with success.
