|Description||While running in second with a few laps to go in the race, Chuck Stevenson came up to lap Rodger Ward (#81). The two cars touched wheels coming out of Turn 4, sending Ward's car spinning out of control into the pits, striking down Clay Smith and several other people working there. Ward's car flipped after hitting the guard rail and apparently carried Smith with it as it ended up several pits away. Ward suffered only minor cuts and bruises. Smith, 39, was killed instantly. Eight others were injured, some from the rush to get out of the path of the car.|
