A new lay-out, marked by straw bales, was used for that race. On the 31st lap Houldsworth approached the "Snake Bends" - as the deviation made by straw bales before by the fast Whitney Straight and near the Members' Bridge was then called - at about 130 km/h. The Bugatti struck a straw bale, and rolled twice up the banking with the driver still stuck to the steering wheel. Houldsworth's skull was fractured and he was taken swiftly to Weybridge Cottage Hospital, accompanied by his wife. Sadly, he died there later in the day.
